Havana, besides the capital and the main harbour in Cuba, is the greatest and most populated city in the Caribbean. It is located in the north-west region of the island, about 170 km to the south of Key West (Florida), in waters of Florida stretch. It has a tropical climate, with August as the hottest month.
Havana harbour is one of the safest in the world, only accesed by a narrow channel, nevertheless allowing the use of transoceanic ships. The entrance is dominated by two ancient fortresses (El Morro and La Punta), with two others in the inner area of the stretch (La Cabaña and La Fuerza). Until the second half of the 18th century the city was protected by a huge wall, of which there are still remains that attest to a defensive system that is unparalleled in this continent. Most of the export-import commerce of the island is done through Havana harbour. The international airport José Martí, to the south-west of the city, carries most of the people transportation in/out Cuba, estimated in around 2 million visitors per year.
Founded in 1519, Havana is one of the most ancient and interesting cities in the new world. Many buildings have being built with light color stones, specially in the historical center known as Old Havana, where narrow streets and old houses with balconies make you feel like in the colony times (1500 - 1900). As time went by, the city expanded and equally beautiful constructions were erected along the seaside. Modern Havana also has theaters, restaurants, nightclubs, museums, art galleries, venues for commercial events and a music of its own. To the west you can find luxury residences, impressive public and religious buildings, wide avenues and beautiful squares and gardens.
Another attraction of Havana are the Santa Maria beaches only 25km to the east. A long stretch of warm, shallow, crystal-clear waters and sparkling white sands. Beach and diving lovers staying in Havana usually combine city offers and the opportunity for swimming, diving, fishing and enjoying water sports just 20 minutes away.
