TRINIDAD

The museum city of the Caribbean, world heritage

Founded by Diego Velázquez in 1514 under the name of Villa de la Santísima Trinidad, the city has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage site. As compared with other cities in the Americas, the historic section of Trinidad is probably the one that has best preserved the colonial atmosphere. Its peculiar urban layout, with cobbled narrow streets, and the architecture of its houses have remained quite unchanged from the original, giving Trinidad the name of the Museum City of the Caribbean.

Most of the old palaces and stately houses have been restored and are now museums, restaurants, souvenir shops and other service establishments patronized by tourists. The most visited sites are the Main Square, the Parroquial Mayor (Parish Church), the Romantic Museum at Brunet Palace, the Santísima Trinidad Church, La Canchánchara Cafe, the Colonial restaurant, the Museum of Architecture, a restaurant at the Old Jailhouse and Casa de la Trova.

Visitors can take daily excursions to the Valley of Sugarmills, also a part of mankind’s cultural heritage since it was the world’s largest canesugar producing center in the 17th century. The ruins of many of the 600 sugarmills that existed in the valley 200 years ago are strewn over this area. As a result of the high concentration of black slaves in the area, a tall tower was built in the middle of the valley to watch for fires in cane plantations and raise the alarm over possible slave uprisings. The Iznaga Tower and the old sugarmill premises, now fully restored, are a favorite attraction among visitors.

Not far, you will find the Ancón beach, with warm, shallow waters and irregular seabed. This is a place to admire exhuberant coral reefs and marine life.
